A dress like this doesn’t come along very often so let me introduce you to this beautiful original 1940s dress so special and in great condition. I don’t have the back story for this dress, however after seeing many 1940s dresses over the years I can tell you this was a very special dress specially made for Carnegie. Shows very little sign of wear with just a small mark on the back the dress could be dry cleaned, however due to the beading I have decided not to have this done. Perhaps it was worn by a bride for her wedding dress or going away dress, perhaps a well to do lady who had a selection of beautiful dresses.
Fabric: Salmon Pink Grosgrain which has a slight shimmer to it, panels of the dress have been decorated with a squiggle cording and white embroidered design with tiny clear and grey beads, there is also a panel of permeant knife pleating.
Please note the colour in the video is not true please see the stills for truer colour
Style: A classic cleverly and beautifully cut 1940s dress for a Special Occasion.
Features: The sleeve is a cap sleeve from the bodice to give the classic forties shoulder line, little shoulder pads could be added if the wearer has sloping shoulders. There are ballet gussets under the arm for ease of movement, the neckline has a classic ‘V’ with an edge-to-edge finish and there are waist darts in the back panels and gathers in the front. The corded design has been completed after the bodice panels and neckline facing were sewn so they cover the seams which is a lovely detail. The Skirt is attached to the bodice with a flat seam and are quite complicated to describe! The back of the skirt has two panels with a 3” (7.5cm) wide kick pleat 14 ½” (37cm) in length from the hem.
The front of the skirt is more detail and design, with the squiggle decorated fabric coming from the waist with a pocket on the left falling in a lovely scooping arc that is echoed in reverse on the panel that falls to the hemline. Under the arc of the skirt that falls just over the centre front line, there is a panel of tiny permanent knife pleats that hangs down freely not seemed into the side seam. The dress is finished with a self-covered buckled belt
Closure: 22 " (56 cm) metal zip down the centre back.
Ideal to wear for: A special occasion dress that can be beautifully accessorised with forties or fifties hat gloves and a bag and even a fitted coat, please see photos for styling ideas. Mother of the Bride Goodwood.
Vintage Condition: Excellent Vintage Condition: Shows very little sign of wear with just a small mark on the back the dress and some service discolouration could be dry cleaned, however due to the beading I have decided not to have this done.
